The Winter Wonderland

Last weekend the skies finally opened up and we got some natural snow falling from above. Two storms rolled in and provided a much needed boost for the season. Mammoth Mountain is claiming four feet of new snow which I’d say is about right. It is enough to have all lifts open and most terrain […]

A Dry December

What a difference a year makes! Last year I seemed to be spending more time digging out our car than skiing – December 2010 had a record-breaking 209” (17.4 ft, 5.3 metres) of snow. This year December is shaping up to be one of the driest Decembers ever with 2” total to date, with only […]

Mammoth the windy Mountain

Mammoth is known for its wind. Sometimes this produces awesome wind blown snow affectionately known by locals as “the buff”. The buff is basically fine snow with a buttery texture that gets naturally filled in by the wind making for amazing skiing, often with fresh tracks every run. However sometimes the wind will scour a […]

Mammoth Opening Day 2011

Mammoth’s opening day was a success all round, good snow, good weather and good company. Woolly was there as usual to make sure the day ran smoothly. He even spared the time to pose for a photo for me. The skiing was pretty decent given how early it is in the season. Broadway was probably […]

Snow guns blazing!

Mammoth Mountain received 6 inches of snow overnight and the snow guns are blazing getting ready for opening day. There is more snow expected tomorrow, every little bit will help. Equally good news is that temperatures have dropped low enough to make snow. It is hard not to get excited at this point!

Conditions Nov 1st

The clock is ticking for the opening of the season, just nine days to go! Unfortunately there is not really any natural snow to report at this time although there is storm in the forecast for Friday so things could change. Temperatures are also meant to drop considerably by the end of the week allowing […]

Snow guns blazing at Mammoth

After some unseasonably warm temperatures and lots of sun for October the temperature has dropped in the last few days allowing snow making to begin. The mountain also received a light dusting of snow overnight to help kick things off. Mammoth is expected to open on November 10th and according to operations staff is on […]

Going…going…

Unseasonably warm temps after the snow storm are eating away at the white stuff on the mountain. However, long-time Mammoth local and Kittredge Sports owner Tom Cage – who correctly predicted the early October storm back in July – has his bets placed on the mountain being open at the end of October. We’ll see!

Bluebird day in Mammoth

After 72 hours of snowy storm, today is absolutely gorgeous. It’s a shame the lifts aren’t running as some of the wind-blown terrain looks quite ski-able! Here are some pictures from about 10am this morning. Notice the gates being installed by the lifts – these are the new RFID gates. According to Mammoth Mountain, “This […]

It begins!

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday’s dusting was just a warm-up compared to the truckload of snow Mother Nature is dumping on Mammoth today. I woke up this morning to the gloomy grey glow of winter – probably about 6 inches in town and over a foot and still going up at Main Lodge. […]
